anti-cyclone: An anti-cyclone is the opposite of a cyclone. A system of winds moving in a spiral pattern toward a central low-pressure zone is called a cyclone. Air moves at high speed toward the center of the low pressure. The rotation of the Earth pushes the high-speed winds sideways. The result is a storm with winds spiraling around the center. In the northern hemisphere, the winds blow in a counterclockwise direction. In the southern hemisphere the winds blow in a clockwise direction. An anti-cyclone is just the opposite. It is a system of high pressure. The strong winds of an anti-cyclone blow in the opposite direction from a cyclone. Cyclones and anti-cyclones move across the surface with the wind currents.
